Trip Summary

Dhaulagiri, the 7th highest mountain in the world at 8167 meters (26795 ft.), lies in the Northwest part of the Myagdi district. The name Dhaulagiri is derived from the Sanskrit words which indicate “white mountain”. Dhaulagiri Base Camp trekking is considered one of the most challenging, restricted area trekking in the Himalayas of Nepal. It provides fascinating views of the Annapurna ranges with lush green valleys. Tranquil landscapes, pine and rhododendron forests, exciting glaciers, ice-covered peaks, hot springs, waterfalls, Thorang peak, Annapurna massif.

Similarly, the community of Rai, Magar, and Thakali people with their diverse nature, culture, and traditional lifestyles impress you the most. Your journey starts and ends in Kathmandu. All the way drive from Pokhara to Beni where you start your trek. The trek passes through Darbang, Muri, Charibian, Italian base camp with high passes. You can also sightsee in Kathmandu and explore ancient temples and monasteries. Sunrise Adventure trek will make your trip awesome. If you have a shorter time, you can do the Ghorepani trek. The trek to Dhaulagiri starts after an 8-hour scenic drive from Kathmandu to Beni. And from there we head to the village of Babichour which is in the north-west. We reach Dorbang and go to Muri from there. We keep our journey going and finally reach Myagdi Khola (river). Muri is also the last settlement of pure Magar tribe who are the stocks of mongoloids and known to descend from middle hills. Now we reach Pakoban, from here there is no permanent settlement.

We still keep heading to the north side and reach the Dhaulagiri base camp from where magnificent mountain sceneries can be observed. Then we climb steep pass, the French pass (5360m), which is between the Tukche Peak (6920m) and Sita Chuchuro “Sita Peak” (6611m). From here we descend a little and pass through a part of the hidden valley and climb up to Thapa Pass (5250m) which is between the Tukche Peak and Thapa Peak (6012m). Finally, it is time to descend down to Alubari from where we further descend toward the village of Marpha near the bank of Kali Gandaki River and then to Jomsom from where flight back to Kathmandu is made.
